What is Wine Rating Wizard?

Wine Rating Wizard (WRW) takes the guesswork out of rating wines. It helps to establish meaningful ratings and to compare between scales.

Both the expert and the novice will find WRW easy to use yet helpful in nailing a wine down on its qualities.

Wine Rating Wizard will guide you through the following important stepts in determining the quality of any wine:

  • Has the wine apparent flaws or shortcomings?
  • Does the wine show standard technical qualities and personality?
  • How's the balance and the finish?
  • Does the wine have any special characteristics indicative of truly excellent wines?

Based on these characteristics, WRW will determine a wine score which is as objective as possible. This allows for comparison between tasters and between wines.

How to use Wine Rating Wizard?

Wine Rating Wizard has an easy to use interface, as you can see in the pictures below:

Figure 1: The "Standard Quality" page of Wine Rating Wizard. The three checkboxes indicate qualities which may or may not be present in the wine you are tasting. When checked, they enance the wine score at the right.

Figure 2: The "Wine Description" page is used to indicate some facts about the wine (such as name, price, date tasted) and tasting notes. These data do not change the wine score and are for reference only.

While you change properties to reflect the properties of the wine in your glass, WRW continues to recalculate the wine rating. You can choose between two types of score generally used:

  • Standard score: ranging from 1 to 20
  • Parker Score: ranging from 51 to 100

After you have provided WRW with details about the wine, you can

  • save the current wine description. The data and the score are saved in a file "winescores.str" in the application directory of WRW. You can edit this file with Simple Table Reader if you wish.
  • export the wine rating to a html page, so that you can publish it on the internet. WRW will ask you to indicate a stylesheet to use, so that your pages have a consistent layout. If you use a stylesheet, you should publish the according .css file in the same directory as your wine reports on the internet.
  • start a new description by pushing the "new" button

Download Wine Rating Wizard for free

You can download the Wine Rating Wizard here for free. Alternatively, you can download a wine rating form here. The form supports the same process for rating wine as the software, but might be more convenient for tastings. To download the form, right-click the link and choose "Save target as" from the popup menu.

WRW is freeware. Use it on your own risk. You have permission to distribute the setup file of WRW and the form on whatever media (CD ROM, website, magazine) you happen to publish.

What's new in version 2?

  • Autocopy style sheet and picture to report directory
  • Auto-open report after generating
  • Scoring system changed to mimic wine rating form
  • Wine rating form made downloadable
