History

From here, you have a good overview of the Orphan Street (Wezenstraat), a typical beguinage street with white boulders that make walking difficult and running dangerous.

The street was levelled in 1685. Until then, the right side of the street was a blind wall and the left side of the street was not part of the beguinage.

Murder tip

"Bzzz! Bzzz!" (it's your mobile phone again).

"Yes?" you ask.

"Headquarters here, Sir--we have an anonymous witness at the telephone. She told us she saw something that might help."

"Yes?" you ask again, "please continue".

"A lady, I think she's eighty or so, at least her voice sounds old. She's upset too. She just left the Vest Sleeve Street where she was with Paula, drinking coffee and talking, you know... She walked in the direction of the St Margareth Street, and suddenly she heard a scream..."

"Then footsteps, then a door slamming, then silence," you add, "I already know that. Did she count the steps?".

"No, sir. She thought there were about fifty," your colleague says, somewhat disappointed.

"Okay, thanks anyway", you conclude, attaching your mobile to your belt again.
